details.
The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) is a collection of databases of
useful resource materials, which are not available on the Web because the
libraries of the Virginia Community College System pay to subscribe to these
collections of articles.
Some of these databases include the following:
InfoTrac |
Factiva
| CQ
Researcher |
FACTs.com
|
SIRS |
Literature Resource Center |
Access
Science |
Ovid |
WorldCat
These databases are licensed by the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA)
and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). In the past they were
accessible only through on-campus Internet terminals.
Now you can access these databases from an
off-campus location (i.e., home, office, etc.) via an EZ proxy server.
What do I need in order to
access the licensed databases off-campus?
To access these databases from an off campus
location, you will need:
- A computer with Internet access
- A VCCS-assigned user name and password
How do I get a VCCS
assigned username/password to access licensed databases off campus?
All students are authenticated in the
VCCS's Directory Server. The student's record in the Directory is
created automatically as part of the course registration process,
regardless of which VCCS college a student calls home. The user id and
password are stored in the Directory when it is created.
NOTE: E-mail, Blackboard, and off-campus access to
the electronic databases all use the same userid and password.
Userid/customer id:
Go to
http://whoami.vccs.edu to look up
your vccs assigned email address.
(Note: Your social security number is your student ID #.) Your userid is
the same as your VCCS E-mail user name -- the part before the
@--INCLUDING THE FOUR NUMBERS. For example, a user whose E-mail
address is ASMITH9999@email.vccs.edu, would
use ASMITH9999 as the userid to open the
online library.
Password: The default password is
your date of birth MMDDYY,
the same as your VCCS E-mail account or Blackboard
account. For example, for someone born on November
22, 1985, their password would be 112285.
Example
To use
InfoTrac,
for instance, click the link and have your passcodes ready to fill in a
screen that looks like the one below. Scrolling down on this page will
show reminders about how to find out your user ID and that your password is
your birthdate.

Chat
NOTE information about LRC LIVE, an interactive, real-time chat room with a
Reynolds’s research librarian. Several students have connected a reference
librarian online with VERY positive reports about how helpful and personal
this service is.

librarian in real time)
