Objective for this Page: To analyze Willy Loman as a tragic hero using Aristotles criteria.

Deciding whether Willy is a tragic hero or not is crucial to understanding whether heroism, in the literary/philosophical sense of the word, is even possible today.

Let's apply the Aristotle test. What would Ari say about Willy Loman as a tragic hero?
Would Aristotle agree that: Yes No
Willy is a character "of noble stature and has greatness"?

Willy is not perfect, that he has a tragic flaw that leads to his downfall?

His tragic flaw partakes of hubris?

His suffering is not wholly deserved?

Through his suffering, Willy gains some self-awareness, some new knowledge that turns his defeat into a sort of triumph?

The play does not leave the audience feeling depressed but, rather, with a sense of compassion and awe?
