Litonline Introduction to Literature |
Okay,
this may be about as close as we get to the possibility of a contemporary tragedy.
A president--about as powerful a figure as you can find these days--who enters office seriously intending to do good (are we stretching credibility here?) and who is brought down by her own sense of compassion mixed with love---and maybe a little hubris (she thinks she can get away with it)--is a strong candidate for tragedy.
And then . . . impeachment and the subsequent shame, especially since she is the first female to hold this office. Well, if that doesn't lead to suffering, I'm not sure what would.
All we have to do is assume that she would then come to a greater understanding of her own weakness and of the nature of power.
Sounds promising--why not sign out of this module and write the script?
