If they're both solicitous and enjoy each other's company early in their relationship, but then they drift apart and prefer paddling their own separate ways--that's an alteration.

Does that mean love has ended? According to this poem, no, the beloved does not stop loving even if whole continents separate the lovers--or divided interests, different careers, different habits, different ideas on having or raising children, etc.
