Tables in Page Composer

Composer Introduction Tables in Page Composer

The Page Composer wizard doesn't include tables so let's make one.  How many rows and columns do you want to list the following information?

your name, discipline or title, office number, office hours, telephone, fax, courses taught this semester

bulletIn Netscape Communicator, click on the word "Communicator" to select "page composer" from that menu.
bulletOn the iconbar, click the grid icon (red square in image below).

bulletIn the dialog box that opens up, specify the number of rows and columns that you decided in the top fields.

Begin entering information (in blue near the top of this page) into your table.  If you decide you would like to have more or fewer cells, notify your instructor, and highlight the cells you would like to merge or to split. PCinsert.gif (3305 bytes)Unfortunately, you have to accomplish revisions by inserting or deleting rows or columns, as you will see when you right-click on the table at the point you want the change to take effect. Merge is not an option in Page Composer, as it is in Front Page's Editor.  It's a bit like doing those hand-held puzzles for which you have to slide the little squares up, down, and sidewise to arrange the pieces to show a picture.

Continue until you get the information set as you wish or your frustration peaks.

Other features:  For each cell or the whole table, you can set width, background color, border color, border width (spacing), distance of contents from borders (padding), and even invisible border (set border line width to zero or uncheck the checkbox so it's blank).  Find these features in the picture below or in your copy of Page Composer.

PCbrdrs.gif (21068 bytes)If your table is nearly full width, you should probably center it so it will look ok in screen resolutions higher than 640x480.

At the bottom of this picture, you can see that you can select a background color for your table and even browse to select an image for your background.   (It's usually best to use bold print against a background image.)

These two features--alignment and background--are offered on the table, row, and cell tabs that pop up when you right-click on your table in Page Composer.

Experiment with these features when you have time. For now go on to the Front Page tryout.
