How Fast Can You Learn Your Students' Names?

As students are working in groups on the first day, I review the roll by looking at students to see which ones I can recall right away, which is usually most.  As the groups report, I may call the group reporter by name, if I've got it.

Fred Henney (TNCC ret.) goes one better.  As groups work on his first day, he makes notes on his roll about one identifying characteristic.
