Great Expectations
Home Up

My thanks to Bill Hightower, SVCC--Christanna, for passing along this idea that he got from Sandy Spain, TNCC.

Great Expectations

What is expected of you?

What can you expect?

In this column, write down all of the behaviors, qualities, and attitudes that you think the instructor expects you to demonstrate in this class. In this column, write down all of the behaviors, qualities, and attitudes that you think the instructor should demonstrate in this class.

When Bill uses this form in his science classes, students usually list qualities of good students and good workers, though the occasional individual brings up ease and has to be reminded of college standards, [the expectations of subsequent teachers in later courses], etc.

Bill notes that he can and does live by the traits that the class brainstorms for the instructor column.  The punch line, however, is that later in the semester, especially after the first test, he can often point out the discrepancy between students actual behavior and the behaviors they know they should exhibit to excel.
