Presentations to the Class

A series of open-ended teaching vignettes from the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies includes this one, which I have adapted for college teachers--

Dr. Marcus' class is making presentations to the class on inventors.

She asks who wants to go first. Deirdre raises her hand and gives her presentation about two chemists who became famous cosmetologists: Madame C. J. Walker and Helena Rubinstein. She displays a poster showing some of the chemical processes required to make face cream. Her presentation lasts seven minutes. There are no questions, but everyone applauds and she sits down.

Ronald goes next. He is dressed in a white lab coat and he talks about Charles Drew, who invented the blood bank system. He also has posters with him, and his presentation lasts 15 minutes. Ms. Marcus asks him several probing questions, and then the class asks other questions. Ronald is in front of the class 25 minutes before he sits down.

If you were Dr. Marcus, what would you do about the unequal time students have for their presentations?
