Multiple Intelligences and Beyond

Author of dozens of books and hundreds of articles, Howard Gardner has pioneered a diversified image of intelligence much broader than the linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences that are the focus of standardized tests and much schooling.

Definition: Exerting specific criteria on empirical research, Gardner accepts as an intelligence a mental trait that has the power to process information, to solve problems, or to fashion products that are valued in a culture or community.  This thesis linking potential and value with eight criteria for an intelligence is the basis of Gardner's Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, his revolutionary 1983 book (New York: Basic Books), which has been translated into many languages and reprinted by five book clubs and three publishers.

Everyone has these intelligences.

Type of Intelligence Description*  Examples
linguistic word sense poets
logical-mathematical seeing patterns, relationships, strategy programmers
bodily-kinesthetic processing data through bodily sensations, [including being "good with one's hands"] dancers, athletes, craftsmen
spatial thinking in images, [including combining shapes in two or three dimensions] pilots, navigators, surgeons
musical listening discrimination, sound awareness composers
interpersonal leadership, communication skills, empathy teachers, actors, sales people
intrapersonal self-motivation, self-awareness counselors?
naturalist biochemical categorizing scientists
existential? facing the "big questions" philosophers

No two people have the same blend of intelligences, not even identical twins.
