VCCS Litonline

Rationale: We hope you will give us feedback below about Litonline http://vccslitonline.vccs.edu/, a World Wide Web-based set of materials to support online or on-campus study of literary works, which was developed by English faculty in the VCCS. Our goal was to provide a flexible selection of webs for teachers to incorporate the Web into their instruction as a complement to on-site classes as well as for delivery of distance learning classes.
Project Team: Eric Hibbison, J. Sargeant Reynolds; Cathy Simpson, Northern Virginia-Manassas; Ron Carter, Rappahannock; and Donna Reiss, Tidewater-Virginia Beach initiated the project in the summer of 1997 with the ongoing support of Mark Raby, then director of instructional technology at JSRCC. We were joined in the fall of 1997 by Rosalind Blunt of Northern Virginia-Loudoun to further develop the core with additional instructional modules. The project, which included extensive testing with students and reviews by students, was funded by a VCCS-wide courseware grant.
In 2002, Eric Hibbison and Rick Dollieslager, two of the five chairs for the VCCS Regional Centers for Teaching Excellence did some renovation of forums, the Litonline website, and added an instructional web under VCCS LearningWare grants, along with getting formal feedback from three faculty reviewers and one class of students. Suggestions by the reviewers from Thomas Nelson Community College--Michael Weiser, Vic Thompson, and Thomas -- became the basis for work by a new team of faculty.
In 2003-2004, Michael Weiser and Eric Hibbison did maintenance work on the Litonline website, updating links and archiving the largest forums--on Oedipus the King and "A Rose for Emily." New webs, which increase the diversity and recency of the works treated within Litonline, were added by Jane Rosecrans on Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" and by Kelli Olson on Maxine Hong Kingston's "No Name Woman." Hibbison also began adding literary criticism for the Hemingway and Faulkner works first. In Summer, 2004, most of this new team is working to finalize the Commonwealth Course apparatus, increase ease of navigation in Litonline, while Michael Weiser adds two interactive webs on poems, "To His Coy Mistress" and "The Flea."
