"The State" = a B-17

This Allen K. Matheson photograph of a B-17 from the 1995 Houston Air Show shows the ball turret on the underside of the plane with its twin protruding machine guns for attempting to ward off enemy fighters that attacked the planes from below. These bombers cruised at 30,000 feet to their target before dropping down to 5,000 feet for a bombing run.
