six miles: Bombers cruised at 30,000 feet, then dived to about 5,000 feet for the bombing run over their target. [The photo's source Website used to be in the name of "J. B. Davis" at Pagesz, but this account is no longer active.]

 

fighters: German aircraft sent to shoot down the
bombers were much faster than the bombers and
often rose up from below with machine guns blazing.

hose: A steam hose was used by ground crew to
clean out the plane, such as the plexiglass turret,
for the crew and replacements.
