Todd, B. E.  "Farewell and Return." In Monteiro, George, ed.  Critical Essays
on Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms.
New York: G.K. Hall & Co.,
        1994:88.

Todd describes a pair of pictures popular in the era of the soldier going off to war and of the soldier returning home.  He suggests that A Farewell to Arms go in between these two as counter-point to "the sickly poison of glory and glamour" of war.

Todd notes that the grim realities of birth surpass those of war, as presented in the novel.
