The Background Photo

The ambulance in the photo at the bottom of each page on this website is a detail of an Italian ambulance photo in the World War I Archive.  The caption reads: "Italian ambulance.  Note overhead screens to prevent overhead observation of roadway.  From photo scrapbook of Pvt. William Voss, 332nd U.S. Infantry, fall 1918."
This background photo is a detail of the original.  This actual Italian ambulance crew could easily have been models for Hemingway's characters and soldiers that the young author might have met himself during his time in the Italian ambulance service.
